How WWE dropped the ball on Bray Wyatt & Bayley’s title wins
This past week the WWE universe witnessed some big changes to two titles on both RAW & Smackdown. First, this past Sunday at Elimination Chamber, we saw Bray Wyatt FINALLY achieve his first single’s championship with a victory inside the new and improved Elimination Chamber to become the new WWE Champion. The following night on RAW, we witnessed Bayley dethrone the queen of the RAW women’s division, Charlotte, to become the new RAW Women’s Champion. But as exciting as both victories were, something just didn’t feel right to me about both of the wins.
Let me be clear on one thing, Bray Wyatt absolutely deserves to be the WWE Champion. He is one of my favorite wrestlers of this new era, and he has put in the work to be where he’s at today. This has been a championship run that’s been in the making for over a year now. But still, I would’ve booked it differently to make it more special.
Let’s rewind to about a month ago at the Royal Rumble. Roman Reigns was essentially used as a piece of the puzzle to assure that whoever won the Royal Rumble would get a huge pop from the crowd. When it came down to the final three – Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, and Bray Wyatt – this is when WWE should’ve capitalized and began Bray’s quest to the top of the mountain. Orton & Wyatt should’ve teamed up and attempted eliminating Reigns, and Orton should’ve been the one eliminated first. Being left with Bray and Roman as the final two guarantees that 99.9% of the crowd would want to see Bray Wyatt get the victory. So, for fantasy booking purposes, let’s say that happens. Bray Wyatt is your Royal Rumble winner and moving on to the main event of Wrestlemania.
Fast forward to Elimination Chamber this past Sunday – replace Bray Wyatt with Randy Orton, and have the same end result of the match. Orton, who has already won the WWE Championship a dozen times, gets the big victory and becomes the champion heading into Wrestlemania. Wouldn’t it just feel more special to see Bray Wyatt finally win the WWE Championship on the grandest stage of them all?
Either way, what’s done is done. Bray Wyatt is your WWE Champion heading into Wrestlemania, and we can only hope that he isn’t dropping the title after less than a month. WWE needs to continue to push Wyatt with a big victory at Wrestlemania over Randy Orton, and potentially Luke Harper as well if it becomes a triple threat match, and give him a lengthy run going into the summer.
As for Bayley’s RAW Women’s Championship victory, it just seemed…out of place. Bayley was one of the most popular superstars in NXT. Since Bayley’s debut on RAW at the end of this past summer, it just hasn’t felt the same, in my opinion. While I absolutely do agree that she does deserve a title run, I just think that it happened too early. Her popularity with the crowd was another opportunity that WWE had to make the moment more special for her eventual title victory. Wrestlemania was the place to do it. Can you imagine 65,000 fans cheering at the sight of Bayley dethroning Charlotte on the grandest stage of them all?
But, again, WWE dropped the ball. The RAW Women’s division continues to be the same as it has been since the brand split last July. It has been dominated with continuous PPV victories by Charlotte, with a few hiccups and title losses on episodes of RAW to Sasha Banks, and now Bayley. I get that WWE is clearly pushing the fact of Charlotte being on this PPV streak, but it has to come to an end. The only way to salvage Bayley’s win on RAW is for her to also defeat her at Wrestlemania. But I’m afraid that WWE will continue with the same crap and have Charlotte regain the title yet again and have another big moment at Wrestlemania.
All in all, I do hope that WWE does the right thing with both title reigns of Bray Wyatt and Bayley. Both have worked hard to be in the positions they’re in – carrying two major titles into the biggest PPV of the year. Will either escape Wrestlemania with their respective titles?
