i hart food eugene oregon

This week on ‘I Hart Food’, YouTuber and host, Hannah Hart, takes us on yet another food journey, this time to explore Eugene, Oregon, which features Willamette Valley, the largest concentration of wineries and breweries in the U.S. Hart teaches us a little bit about the history of the Prohibition to demonstrate how bar food came about from speakeasies and cocktail parties.

Her first stop is a restaurant called Party Downtown, that showcases elevated bar food using unique but local ingredients. For example, their delicata squash skins are a spin on the traditional potato skins. But my favorite part of the segment was seeing their version of tater tots; fried gnocchi. For anyone who doesn’t know, gnocchi is basically pasta made out of mashed potatoes and the idea of it being a tater tot definitely seems not only elevated but all-around delicious to me.

Hart then goes to a Japanese-inspired cocktail bar, Izakaya Meiji where she reminisces about the time when she had the opportunity to live in Japan while studying abroad while eating marinated hangar steak kabobs and croquettes. Next, she visits a very popular ice cream shop, Red Wagon Creamery that has unlikely but delicious flavor combinations with alcohol like their vodka-roasted beets ice cream flavor with a fudge swirl and malted milk balls. The creamery is so unique that it even has unusual toppings like their bourbon caramel made from candy cap mushrooms or a tarragon whipped cream.

To finish off the show, Hart finally visits a local brewery that exclusively grows their own hops which is one of the main four ingredients in beer, the other three being water, yeast, and malt. Hannah Hart once again proves to be a delightful host full of food puns and interesting fun facts about a certain city and their local food. But there are only two episodes left of the short series and you can watch the next episode on Food Network on Monday nights at 10/9c.
