Wonder Woman
DC gave fans a huge bounty yesterday at San Diego Comic Con, but the thing that maybe was the most hotly anticipated was the Wonder Woman trailer.  Given how hyped everyone has been about Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman since she was first revealed in the Batman v Superman trailer last year, this is only to be expected.

The trailer opens on the beaches of what is presumably Themyscira, Diana’s home.  Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine (of Star Trek) has just washed up on the beach, and he’s the first man she’s ever seen.

We proceed to see glimpses of Diana and her relationship with her people, her mother, and Steve, as well as a whole of ass kicking.  Highlights include Wonder woman in a blue backless gown, her sword ‘concealed’ against her back, and lines like ‘They don’t deserve you,’ in reference to her.  The trailer also ends on a high note, where we meet Steve’s secretary, Etta Candy.  Upon learning what a secretary is, Diana smirks a little and glances at Steve, chiding, ‘Where I’m from, that is called slavery.’  Etta replies ‘Oh, I like her, I really do.’

Wonder Woman is shaping up to be everything fans have hoped for, and really, everything I’ve hoped for, too.

It’s lines like ‘They don’t deserve you’ that really seal the deal for me, because it’s true: the world of men doesn’t deserve a woman like Diana, and it’s only her kindness and her choices that bring her out of her people’s isolation.  As she says to Steve Trevor in the middle of the trailer, ‘What I do isn’t up to you.’

I try not to apply the label feminist or unfeminist to films as a rule, because no film is perfect or completely irredeemable, but Wonder Woman is definitely delivering, so far, on the kinds of feminist nuance promised by the DCEU up to this point.

And man, is there really anything more hype-building than her theme song?

I submit that there is not.
