Illinois vs Northwestern Preview and Prediction
Illinois vs Northwestern Preview
Another early season Big Ten matchup tips off tonight. We already previewed and predicted Purdue vs Maryland and now we are on to an underrated showdown between Illinois and Northwestern.
Northwestern, fresh off its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, already is a disappointing 4-3 and out of the Top 25 rankings. Illinois, 6-1 but yet to claim a victory of note, is acclimating to life with first-year coach Brad Underwood.
Illinois is coming off a rough loss, 80-73 to a sub par Wake Forest team. Aaron Jordan led the team with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting with a 4-for-6 mark from downtown with 5 rebounds and a pair of steals. Kipper Nichols came 2nd with 14 points with a team-high 7 rebounds, while Leron Black added 10 points and 7 boards of his own to round out the scoring in double figures for the Illini.
For Northwestern, they need to rebound from a heartbreaking 53-52 loss at the hands of Georgia Tech on a buzzer-beating layup as time expired.
Bryant McIntosh led the team with 18 points on 8-of-18 shooting with a pair of threes and a team-high 5 assists, while Vic Law added 12 points with 5 rebounds and 3 steals and Dererk Pardon chipped in 10 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double. McIntosh leads the team with an average of 15.7 points and 5.7 assists per game this season and Pardon is the team’s leading rebounder with 6.1 rebounds this season.
Northwestern entered the season ranked within the Top 25 but losses to solid programs like Creighton, Texas Tech and Georgia Tech have resulted in their disappearance from the rankings. Despite their 4-3 record, this is a solid team who should have NCAA Tournament aspirations again. For Illinois, coach Brad Underwood has a rebuilding project on his hands–it’s been years since the Fighting Illini have been relevant in the college basketball world. Underwood is the right man for the job, but his first year on campus won’t result in a lot of conference success.
LINE: -5 Northwestern
Lay the points because Northwestern will post a double-digit victory.
