Into the Badlands: “Black Heart, White Mountain” Recap and Review
Last week on Into the Badlands, Sunny and M.K. reunited but their battle with the Abbots cost Ava her life. Veil took refuge with the Widow for a short time before the baroness gave her back to Quinn as a part of the terms of their alliance. Episode six ended with Sunny falling unconscious after one of the Abbots attacked him before dying. “Black Heart, White Mountain” kicked off last night inside one of Sunny’s hallucinations.
It was all a Dream
While Sunny dealt with his hallucinations, M.K. and Bajie were forced to team up and save him. These two didn’t exactly start off on the best foot in episode seven. Bajie explained that the Abbot hit Sunny with something called the “five poisons” which affected his organs. The pair argued quite a bit before heading to the Abbots. On the road, they shared stories about why they left the monastery. Bajie left because a young girl named Flea that he was training lost control on a mission. She killed everyone including the people they were trying to save. When they returned the Master was not happy about Flea’s actions.
In his hallucinations, Sunny awakened to Veil and an older Henry. Things seemed fine until the former clipper found pigs in their barn with crosses cut into their sides. Henry’s friend Artemis ended up being a literal ghost from Sunny’s past. Veil quickly became worried for her son and his safety. When Veil tried to take Henry and leave, Henry killed her. Sunny went after Artemis and faced the ghosts of those he clipped as well as his fear that Henry will end up being a killer like him.
Short on time, M.K. and Bajie got into the monastery and found the scroll that explained the “five poisons” and the needles needed to reverse it. Bajie also found Sunny’s compass but told M.K. it was long gone. It came as no surprise that they got caught. We couldn’t go without a badass fight sequence! Bajie smartly cut the Abbot trainees, forcing them to go dark and use their gifts against one another. The Master was left to stop her students from killing each other.
The needles and the scroll worked and Sunny woke up from his nightmarish hallucinations. While he recovered, Bajie revealed to M.K. that he helped Flea escape from the Abbots. He was also shown looking at Sunny’s compass.
Bad Week for Jade
In this week’s subplot, we saw Quinn and the Widow’s first move as allies. Jade got more than she could handle when they led an assault on her house. Before she could flee, she got captured and most of her clippers were killed or injured. Since the Widow doesn’t kill women, they left her for Quinn to deal with. Instead of killing her he decided to leave her in the wild to fend for herself.
Final thoughts on this week’s Into the Badlands
Announcement to the writers of Into the Badlands: This is the only time I ever want to see Veil seriously injured or dead. Those hallucinations went from being emotional because of Henry and Sunny to stressful. While it probably won’t be included because there’s a bigger story to focus on, I’d be interested in seeing a flashback of Sunny’s encounter with Artemis and her brother. She must have been a significant kill to be the one ghost in Sunny’s mind that has a name and face.
Bajie stealing the compass was no surprise. He’s been shifty and concerned with himself since we first met him at the start of the season. Sure, he shows some heart when he helps Sunny, but that’s really only been in his own self-interest. Who knows what he’ll do with the compass. We shall have to wait and see. Next week, Sunny and M.K. will come face to face with the Widow. Maybe Quinn will show his face too. I’m giving this week’s episode of Into the Badlands a 10/10. The hallucinations were cool to watch and hearing about Bajie’s backstory was interesting. Mary Ann slapping Jade was quite a moment as well.
