into the badlands

Last week on AMC’s Into the Badlands, M.K. and Bajie battled the master and the abbots to find the scroll and supplies needed to save Sunny from death. We also learned that Bajie left the monastery after his student, Flea suffered the needle room. Sunny was stuck in a nightmare like trance where he met an older Henry and suffered Veil’s death. He also faced the spirits of those he killed during his time as a clipper. At the end of the episode, Bajie had Sunny’s compass and the trio prepared to head back into the badlands.

“Sting of the Scorpion’s Tail” kicked off last night with The Widow and her butterflies taking out Baron Hassan with ease. On the other side of the wall Sunny, M.K., and Bajie get smuggled back into familiar lands, only to end up right in Baron Chau’s hands. Sunny is able to strike a deal with the baron; he will out The Widow and kill Quinn and she will grant him his freedom. Donning Chau’s white clipper garb, he came up with the plan to use M.K. as bait, leaving an angry Bajie behind. It turns out that Sunny actually gave the former abbot the key to his cell, which Bajie used to escape and follow them.

Quinn and the Widow wasted no time showing off their kills. Quinn produced Baron Broadmore’s head and The Widow displayed Hassan’s. The only thing the Widow didn’t plan for was Quinn to have the heads of Broadmore’s wives and children. It was just another moment that reiterated the fact that this alliance won’t last for long. Tilda was caught off guard when she saw Veil.

During a tense dinner, Quinn told Lydia and Veil that he planned to make Henry his rightful heir by marrying Veil. Neither of the women is happy about the idea, but with Veil’s life on the line, she complied. While Veil goes through with the wedding, performed by Lydia none the less, Sunny and M.K. head to the location they’ve planned to confront the Widow. Plans quickly changed when The Widow revealed that she knew where Veil and Henry were. She and Sunny team up to take down Chau’s clippers while Bajie watched the action from outside.

The message of the attack and Sunny’s return came just in time to stop Quinn and Veil from consummating their marriage and Veil from slicing Quinn’s throat with a razor blade.

Final thoughts on this week’s Into the Badlands

Watching Veil marry Quinn was so cringeworthy. I’m so relieved that they didn’t consummate the union. I would have cheered though if Veil had killed Quinn while he was otherwise distracted. M.K. is quite naive if he thought Sunny was actually going to let Chau sell him to the river king. M.K.’s doubt in Sunny was frustrating. After everything he’s done and risked for him you would think there would be more trust.

There are only two episodes left in the season and I’m almost convinced that things will end on a cliffhanger like last season. This episode was very tense. The sequence featuring Sunny and The Widow versus Chau’s clippers was on point. My only complaint is that M.K. looked like he had no idea what to do. We saw him getting some combat training from the abbots, so why did he look like a scared puppy? With shaky alliances, Quinn’s marriage plans, and Tilda’s growing hesitance towards her mother, the Badlands are in for plenty of action over the next two weeks.

I’m giving this week’s episode of Into the Badlands a 9/10. It was a pretty good episode, but the pacing felt slow at points. Besides that, I enjoyed it. Badlands airs on AMC Sundays at 10 PM EST. Full episodes are available on AMC.com and season is streaming on Netflix.

Here’s a preview for next week’s episode.
