Iona and Niagara had different results during non-conference play–NU was the only MAAC team to finish with a winning record (7-6) while Iona struggled to a 2-9 start. MAAC play has been a different story however, the Gaels have begun to turn their season around with a 2-0 start in conference and the Purple Eagles have taken a step back, losing their first two conference games.

Will it be more of the same? Or will Niagara pull out their first conference win at home?

All-time series

Iona leads the series 47-36. Niagara and Iona have split the series in the last two seasons with the visiting team winning both times.

Home sweet home?

Playing games on your home court can always help right the ship and that could be the case for the Purple Eagles when they host Iona. Or will it? Niagara had a 6-3 record in MAAC home games last season, which was their best record since the 2012-13 season–however, NU has not beaten Iona on their home court since the 2012-13 season.

Prochet leads the way

Senior Marvin Prochet has taken a gigantic step forward this year, improving his game in almost every statistical category and the college basketball world has taken notice. Hoops HD named Prochet the MAAC Player of the Year so far, and it’s easy to see why, Prochet is averaging 17.2 points, 8.5 rebounds 1.9 assists per game. He is shooting 42 percent from everywhere on the court (two-point and three-point percentage).

The step forward he made this year one of the main reasons why NU has seen success this season.

McGill catching fire

Senior Rickey McGill ha scored in double figures in every game this season besides one, but his last two games (both MAAC games) he has stepped up his play even more.

He scored a season-high 29 points on 9-for-11 shooting against Monmouth and followed that up with an all-around performance filling up the stat sheet with 15 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals.

Prediction

LINE: -1.5 Niagara

O/U: 167

Dan’s Bet: -1.5 Niagara

Personally, I’m staying away from this game. Doing the research into this game preview, I figured I would pick the hotter team–Iona–who has some success inside Gallagher Arena, but then I looked how they’ve done lately ATS. Not good.

The Gaels are 2-11 ATS this season, 0-5 ATS on the road and 0-7 ATS as the underdog. That terrifies me.

Score Prediction: Niagara 83 Iona 81
