Last night, the Gonzaga Bulldogs were a win against Brigham Young University away from a 30-0 regular season.

After the game, Gonzaga was 29-1 after BYU beat them 79-71.

Gonzaga dropped from their number one ranking. They are now fourth in the country, but are still highly favored to get a one seed on Selection Sunday.

The real question is: Is Gonzaga as good as their record seems?

It is almost impossible to finish a regular season in any sport (unless you are Geno Auriemma), but if you can come close you are automatically held in high regard as a contender. Does Gonzaga’s record tell you everything you need to know though?

First things first, Gonzaga comes out of the West Coast Conference. With all due respect to the teams and their conference, is not saying much. They have a good chance of getting three teams into the tournament which is not bad. However, only four of the 10 teams are solidly over .500 on the year.

When you take into account the schools that are in the conference, along with the teams they scheduled out of conference, Gonzaga’s opponents overall record 286-246. That is a winning percentage of 53.8 percent. St. Mary’s and BYU represent the only quality opponents in the conference with 26-3 and 21-10 records respectively.

Outside of the WCC, the only quality games they played were against #12 Florida (23-6), #24 Iowa State (19-9), #7 Arizona (26-4), and Akron (23-6). These four games were won by a combined 32 points, 18 of which came against Akron. The win over Florida was by five, Iowa State by two, and Arizona by seven.

Almost every other Gonzaga win was by 20 or more points. This will not bode well for them in the tournament. They will be forced to play against more top-tier teams. They have proven so far, that when it comes to good teams, they are barely squeaking by.

When it comes time to set up the bracket, Gonzaga seems like a team that will be primed for a fall via upset. I would be surprised if they make it past the round of 32.
