Deacon Jones the so-called “creator of the sack” died in 2013 and the NFL named the award after him shortly thereafter. Although sacks were not an officially recorded statistic back in the 60’s and 70’s when Jones played, he was one of the all-time greats to get to the quarterback.

With 17.5 sacks this year, Watt is the league leader for the second time in his career. He also led the league with 20.5 sacks in 2012. He joins elite company with Reggie White as the only two football players to have three seasons with at least 17 sacks.

“An individual award is never individually earned,” Watt said in a statement released by the league. “This honor is a testament to my teammates and coaches for helping me to be successful each week. I am humbled and honored to receive the Deacon Jones Award and I will always continue to strive toward new heights of greatness.”

After starting the season slow, both as an individual and a team, Watt and the Texans picked up steam as the season went along earning an AFC South division title. Watt will give the Chiefs offensive line a handful when they square off on Saturday night.
