Justice League

Since the news broke at San Diego Comic Con 2013 that Batman would be introduced in the next Superman movie, fans have been clamoring to see who would be cast as the next Commissioner Gordon. The role would tough to fill after Gary Oldman’s near perfect portrayal in The Dark Knight Trilogy. Many fans wanted Bryan Cranston cast as the Dark Knight’s chief ally on the police force – I was one of those lobbying for his hire. As time went on we got more casting news for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Batman would be played by Oscar winner Ben Affleck and the role of Alfred went to Oscar winner Jeremy Irons.  When Jena Malone was cast, many speculated she would be playing Barbara Gordon, this news however was potentially debunked by Zack Snyder himself.  According to EW “I think we should keep it private, but it’s nothing that’s been talked about, She’s definitely not Robin or Batgirl. I’m happy to say that.”

Fans began to believe since this was an older Batman, could Commissioner Gordon be dead. The thought of a beloved character being dead did not set to well with some fans. Casting news has come and gone for Batman v Superman but today news hit the wire that fellow Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons was cast to play  Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming ‘Justice League’ film.  The news first reported by Variety , has the comic-book movie world on fire.

This is huge casting news and shows that Warner Bros. and DC have complete faith in Snyder and the direction the DCEU is going. Also it seems WB/DC are not holding back when it comes to casting. This makes four Oscar-winning actors (Affleck, Leto, Irons, Simmons) cast in DCEU and one Oscar-winning writer (Terrio).

I think the hire is an amazing one to be honest. Simmons can play a wide range of roles and showed he can be a serious actor with his winning performance in ‘Whiplash‘. Simmons has the right amount of sarcasm and wit to counter Batman’s dark and brooding attitude. Many fans hoped he would be brought back for his dead-on J. Jonah Jameson role in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man‘ reboot. I never figured Marvel would bring him back and since it’s a reboot would go with a newer actor for that role.

What is now Marvel’s loss is DC’s gain. Simmons will bring a new attitude to the DCEU and new take on the Commissioner Gordon role. I look forward to his banter with Batman and see how their relationship unfolds. I am also looking forward to seeing Superman, Lois, Batman, and Gordon all on-screen for the first time together. Great things are on the horizon for WB/DC and they are giving fans something to look forward to.

Justice League is set to go into production April 11th, 2016.
