James Conner-RB-Pittsburgh
Size: 6’2 235lbs

James Conner

Strengths:

  • True leader/mentally tough
  • Tackle breaker
  • Naturally powerful
  • Pass protection
  • Balance

Analysis: Everyone knows the story of James Conner–overcoming a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma to return to the field.  He was a team captain known for incredible resilience and mental toughness. Leaned down and added more muscle mass this season. Arm tackles are a waste of time. Carries a load and is willing to drop his pads and lay the hurt on opposing defenders.  Natural power in lower half. Doesn’t need a clean point of entry for aggressive, downhill charge. Excellent contact balance despite heavy shots on his legs. I see him as a short-yardage or goal-line specialist at the next level. Willing blocker in pass protection.

Weaknesses:

  • Speed
  • Lateral movement
  • Questionable hands
  • Medical history

Analysis: James Conner might be powerful, but he lacks the speed to be an every down back at the next level. He won’t be able to outrun defenders to the edge on outside zone runs. Strictly an in-between the tackles runner.  All power, no finesse. Can be a little slow to process moving parts in front of him. Not a press-and-cut back and needs to learn to set blocks up better. Hands a little stiff as pass catcher and will fight the ball at times. He is a North/South runner who struggles when moving laterally.

NFL Comparison: Jason Snelling

Draft Projection: Round 6
