Strengths:

  • Accurate to all levels of the field
  • Good arm strength
  • Reads defenses well
  • Decent mobility within the pocket
  • 4-year starter at Cal, experienced

Analysis: Goff, who was a four-year starter for Sonny Dykes at Cal, is the most polished of all the quarterbacks in this draft class. He has the ability to make all of the throws, from deep out routes, to short, crisp slants. Goff has a quick over-the-top release and isn’t afraid to zip the ball through tight windows, usually leading his receivers away from danger. I saw a huge improvement from his first two seasons to this season recognizing blitzes pre-snap and understanding what the defense is trying to do. With what I consider a weak group of quarterback’s in the 2016 class, Goff should take full advantage. While I do not consider him a ‘star’ he has the talent and football IQ to be a solid starter at the next level.

Weaknesses:

  • Footwork within the pocket, gets ‘happy feet’
  • Not as accurate throwing on the run
  • Thin, lanky frame could result in durability concerns
  • Ran strictly Shotgun, up-tempo offense at Cal
  • Will not outrun anyone at the next level

Analysis: No doubt, playing in the type of offense Dykes ran at Cal helped inflate Goff’s passing numbers. His thin, lanky frame might scare some scouts away, but he has never missed a game due to injury. His inconsistent offensive line play has led to Goff developing a bad habit of happy feet in the pocket and though he has shown admirable courage in taking hits to deliver passes, he too often throws without his feet set, sapping velocity and accuracy. His mobility within the pocket has improved, but he will not scramble for many 10+ yard gains against NFL defenses. Many scouts have said he projects well in a pro-style offense, but he ran only a shotgun/spread system at Cal.

Round Prediction: Top 10

NFL Comparison: Andy Dalton
