  • Natural gait with plus speed in pursuit chase around the field
  • Swim-and-slither winner when working the gaps
  • Very agile for size

Weaknesses:

  • Tore ACL in pre-draft workout, could miss entire 2019 season
  • Off-field question marks
  • Doesn’t set the edge
  • Lacks instincts and play recognition
  • Will freelance out of position rather than playing his run fit

Size: 6’4 301lbs

Analysis: It’s a shame that Simmons tore his ACL leading up to the draft because he was in a position to be the first defensive lineman drafted out of a VERY deep class. The injury will knock him out of the first round, but whatever team selects him will be getting a steal–he is a Top 10 talent in this draft, when healthy of course. Simmons has a rare combination of strength and athleticism for future dominance in a variety of defensive schemes. He can line up anywhere along the defensive front and wreak havoc. Questions will surely arise in the pre-draft interview process because Simmons has a checkered past. He was arrested for his part in a March 2016 fight, and a video of him repeatedly punching a woman made him a nationwide target for those wondering why colleges allow the enrollment and athletic participation of players with violent histories. He was found guilty of malicious mischief and pled no contest to simple assault, paying fines and restitution for the woman’s medical bills. During his time in Starkville, however, he has had no incidents. His on-field issues are self-created and largely due to a lack of instincts, but the physical tools and immense upside outweigh those concerns. Simmons has All-Pro potential and should become an early starter and star when he recovers from his knee injury.

Dan’s Rank: Top 5 prior to injury

NFL Comparison: Fletcher Cox

Draft Projection: A steal on Day 2
