Jerry Tillery Scouting Report

jerry tillery scouting report
(Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports)

Strengths:

  • Size
  • Muscular frame
  • Elite natural power
  • Has size and play traits to become dominant two-gapper
  • Uses upper-body power to dominate blockers
  • Shows glimpses of upper-body flexion and hip flip to work over the top of slow-footed interior blockers

Weaknesses:

  • Reaction off the snap is inconsistent
  • Ends up on the ground more than teams might like
  • Doesn’t utilize hands enough
  • Heavy legs
  • Loses a lot of battles when leverage is off

Analysis: Tillery is a former offensive lineman who made the switch to defense and possesses a ton of potential. He is still raw and can really get with his position coach to become a force at the next level. Scouts would like to see more dominant tape considering his size and power, but if he takes coaching and learns to unleash his hands, he could become an unruly interior force and good three-down starter. He fits a 3-4 scheme rather than 4-3 but could play in both if asked. Consistency from game-to-game leaves many scratching their heads–he looks like an All-Pro one game to only look like a backup the next. Whoever drafts him should not expect him to contribute much as a rookie.

Size: 6’6 295lbs

Draft Grade: Day 2 grade

NFL Comparison: Arik Armstead

Draft Projection: Day 2 pick
