Jessie Bates Draft Profile

Jessie Bates Draft Profile

Strengths:

  • Instinctive
  • Versatile, has ability to be utilized in a variety of coverages and alignments
  • Excels in coverage
  • Has pattern recognition to shade the breaks
  • Smooth hips
  • Footwork
  • No stall at the top on his plant-and-drive
  • High school outfielder and hooper with plus ball tracking and ball skills
  • Excellent route balance from zone
  • Volume tackler who is drawn to the football
  • Processes quarterback at same speed quarterback is processing field

Analysis: Jessie Bates is a versatile safety option with the athletic ability to handle man coverage responsibilities in space and the instincts and ball skills to post ball production in zone coverage. Bates is more than willing as a hitter, but can get himself in trouble as an open-field tackler due to inconsistent pursuit angles and technique. His coverage skills have been called ‘elite’ and he can work in both man and zone schemes (I believe he is better in zone than man). His footwork is fluid, rarely causing any issues. You can tell his ball skills are a plus. Eyes are glued to the QB. He is not afraid to make any tackle and his plant-n-go once he sees the ball carrier are special. Has a nose for the football.

Weaknesses:

  • Has just two years of game experience
  • Needs to add muscle mass
  • Doesn’t have a big second gear in his closing burst
  • Inconsistent tackler
  • Overpursues and allows runners to cut back across his face
  • Needs to play with better discipline in deep coverage responsibilities
  • Durability concerns

Analysis: Jessie Bates only has two years of starting experience and is leaving Wake Forest a year early. His frame is small, thin and he will need to add more weight and muscle if he plans to attack ball carriers the way he did in college. He is always willing to lay the big hit, but he Bates fails to consistently wrap up, causing a flurry of missed tackles. He gets amped up, ready to make a tackle and will be too aggressive overpursuing himself right out of the play. Scouts we have talked to wonder how his body will hold up for an entire NFL season.
