If you listened to the My Fantasy Podcast this week, you know Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets are continuing their standstill on a new contract. Fitzpatrick has rejected a 3-year $24 million contract that would pay him $12 million in the first year. He did however counter that contract, asking for a one-year deal for $12 million, fully guaranteed. The Jets have answered that with a resounding, NO.

Jets
(USA TODAY Sports)

The Jets who are limited in salary cap space want to sign Fitz closer to what he is actually worth. As noted on the podcast, history is not on Fitzpatrick’s side. The last time he signed a big contract with the Bills, it blew up in the teams face. New York would also like to have him under contract in 2017 in case Christian Hackenberg, the teams second-round pick in 2016 is not ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

I expect this back-and-forth to continue through the summer months leading up to Training Camp, and if Geno Smith shows the team progress, the Jets could leave Fitz hanging altogether. That however, heavily depends on Geno Smith and while the team says they are confident in him, he is a step below what Fitzpatrick offers.
