You may not have heard of him, but Joc Pederson is one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ best young players. He can swing the bat and play great center field defense. At 23 years of age, Pederson isn’t in quite in the prime years of career, but he doesn’t seem to know that. He has begun this season on a tear, his level of production far exceeding his level of experience.

On the offensive side Joc hits for a solid average, draws a ton of walks and has plenty of pop. Presently, he’s hitting a touch under 300, at .296, has a .458 OBP. Likewise, if he can continue anywhere near his current pace, he is on pace for 20+ home runs, 40 doubles and 80+ RBIs. With a full season of at-bats and good health under his belt, Rookie of the Year honors isn’t too far off.

The Dodgers are overflowing with big league talent and Joc is a shinning example. With veterans Andre Ethier and Carl Crawford, Scott Van Slyke and the ineffable Yasiel Puig, LA should have what turns out to one of the best, and deepest, outfields in the game. Even injuries to Puig and Crawford haven’t mitigated the unit’s above average production.

With Los Angeles’ deep lineup, Joc Pederson should continue to get plenty of pitches to hit. Furthermore, his keen awareness of the strike zone and superior pitch selection and recognition should be insurance against long slumps or other inevitable trials of MLB’s grueling regular season. Currently, Joc’s OPS is 1.014, an outstanding statistic. Pederson should continue to rack up plenty of at bats and seems destined to stay at center field for years to come. It’s possible in fact that with injury problems of the veteran outfielders and the reckless play of Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson could become the premier producer. He could become the most consistent offensive and defensive contributor by the time the regular season comes to a close. That’s saying a lot for a player just entering his first full season.
