Jodie Meeks and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope were locked in a training camp battle for the Pistons starting shooting guard spot.  KCP wins by default to open the season due to Meeks injuring his lower back–which will sideline him for months.

This gives the second year pro out of Georgia a chance to impress new coach Stan Van Gundy.  Pope played fairly well as a rookie averaging 6 points, 2 rebounds in under 20 minutes of action a night.  Known for his three point shooting, KCP only hit 31% of his attempts from downtown last year, a number he has focused on increasing in the offseason.

I’m a fan of Van Gundy as a coach, and I am confident he can mold Pope into a solid two guard in this league.  Remember SVG’s Orlando Magic teams loved to shoot from long range–leading the NBA in three pointer’s attempted multiple times during Van Gundy’s tenure.  That bolds well for Caldwell-Pope and his fantasy value.

In our recent mock draft KCP was not even drafted in our 10-man league, but that was before the news of Meeks injury surfaced.  Since the injury, Pope is being drafted in the 12th round or later in standard leagues, and carries a lot of fantasy value in that range.
