Yesterday, 14-year veteran Joe Johnson was bought out of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets. The Miami Heat will sign him once he clears the waiver period.

The Heat are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. Johnson will provide a scoring boost off the bench for the team as they proceed to the end of their season. Johnson is averaging 11.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists this season.

Other teams in the running for Johnson include the Cleveland Cavaliers and Johnson’s former team the Atlanta Hawks. The Cavaliers are currently 1st in the East. They have the best odds of reaching the NBA Finals and winning an NBA championship, which puts into question why Johnson wouldn’t choose a stronger team to play with. The Atlanta Hawks are the weakest of the three teams in 7th. Even with Johnson, the Hawks still wouldn’t be favored any higher.

Johnson also had the option of going to the top teams in the West. Golden State, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City but they weren’t in the running.

Johnson will clear waivers at 5pm on Saturday.
