Joker and Harley dominate ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer
With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice three weeks into its current run, WB has shifted its focus to the next film in the DCEU lineup, Suicide Squad. Tonight during the annual MTV Movie Awards, fans were shown a brief clip of the new trailer and it did not disappoint. Though if you want to see more footage, check out the trailer linked at the bottom. They have chosen quite a musical line up that fits each trailer like a glove and sets the tone nicely. During Comic Con last year the footage shown was set to ‘I Started a Joke‘ by the BeeGee’s. That song went perfect with the more dark and terrifying tone of the trailer. The following trailers have been lighter and with more humor so the songs have been more upbeat. Suicide Squad trailer #1 was set to Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ and trailer #2 released tonight was set to ‘Ballroom Blitz‘ by The Sweet.
Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn are front and center for tonight’s trailer. During April Fool’s day, the Joker took over Twitter and the Suicide Squad Twitter page. He promised he would return in 10 days and he made good on that promise. We get to see and hear more from Jared Leto’s Joker and we get to hear that amazing laugh. I still feel like his voice is more comparable to Heath Ledger’s but his laugh is one of the best ever. For all the gripe against Batman v Superman being dark and humorless, Suicide Squad seems to be full of humor. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) provides the humor at every turn. We get some great shots of her in action and even using her trademark mallet. I feel like Harley is going to provide some off-the-wall laughs with her crazy moments and actions. Also she is smoking hot! How hot? You will see just how hot she is during the trailer. Margot was born to play Harley and I cannot wait to see her and Leto together on-screen.
The trailer also focuses on why the Suicide Squad was created. The events surrounding Superman during Batman v Superman have led to Amander Waller putting this task force together. We see that the United States government is still worried about aliens and meta-humans even after all Superman did for the planet and they want a task force capable of stopping such beings. I love that Superman is front and center of the DCEU and the glue that holds it all together. His presence is the world has changed everything, both good and bad.
There was something else I was going to mention… Oh that’s right! We get to see Ben Affleck as The Batman! We see Batman dive into the water after Harley and then carrying her to the Batmobile. We also see the footage of Batman on top of the Joker’s car. There is a shot of what looks to be Batman chasing them in the Batmobile as well. The Batmobile now has the guns removed from the front which show that Bruce has changed and is honoring Superman as he said he would. This just makes me want to geek out! The closest we ever got to Joker/Harley/Batman was during Batman: The Animated Series and the Arkham series games. In four months we will finally get to see them all on the big screen at one time. I cannot stress how amazing it was seeing Batman in this trailer. This entire movie is pretty much a rogues gallery of Batman villains, so it makes sense he would be in it.
The trailer also gives us more footage of Diablo (Jay Hernandez) and his power manipulating fire. There is a joke during the bar scene where all of them are ordering liquor or beer and Diablo asks for water. Harley then makes a comment on him being a smart man. We also get glimpses of the rest of the team, mainly Deadshot (Will Smith) but it’s a very Joker/Harley edited trailer. I do hope we get to know these characters a little better before the film comes out. They have shown Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) briefly but I’d like to know more about her role as well. We still have some time and I am sure they will educate us all on each member before the film is released.
David Ayer looks like he has put his own signature and style into the movie and so far it looks fabulous. A movie about “Bad Guys” is right up his alley and while the plot is still vague, we do know that the events of Batman v Superman are what trigger this team. I do hope we get some depth into what the movie is about and I hope that this will be the huge hit that WB/DC and the fans want it to be. So far they have nailed it with every trailer and they just keep getting better. I am hyped and excited for this film and I truly think WB has a winner on their hands. I think the tone of this movie will be dark like DC loves it but you will see more humor and the movie looks like a thrill ride of fun.
