Josey Jewell Draft Profile

Josey Jewell draft profile

Strengths:

  • Initial play diagnose and trigger to the ball is immediate
  • Film junkie who recognizes blocking schemes and adjusts accordingly
  • Eyes work fast
  • Flashes a decent burst to the ball and can close out runners if he’s in the area
  • Well-schooled with hands in taking on blocks
  • Elite tackler and highly productive in that area
  • Quick recovery against play-action and misdirection
  • Plays ahead of work-up blocks
  • High football IQ

Analysis: On the borderline from a size standpoint, Josey Jewell already had his detractors who worried about whether he was big enough to handle inside duties. On top of that, he ran a painfully slow forty at the Combine (4.82) and that will send him tumbling down the draft board. On the field, however, he is a highly instinctive linebacker who combines physicality with a relentless motor to find his way into play after play. Jewell’s consistency and football character give him a shot at becoming a solid NFL’er despite his speed limitations. He reads plays before they even begin to develop and that allows him to race past blockers with his speed limitations. Jewell loves the game of football and spends countless hours in the film room to get an advantage over his opponents. He is an elite wrap-up tackler with high tackle numbers during his time at Iowa. Bottom line, Josey Jewell is a highly intelligent football player with the ability to make plays that you wouldn’t think a kid of his athletic caliber would be able to make. Helps any locker room he is in.

Weaknesses:

  • Does not possesses desired NFL speed and lacks long limbs and loose frame
  • Ducks head into initial take-on blocks
  • Can get engulfed by size and stuck on blocks
  • Lateral agility, change of direction and overall reactive athleticism is just average
  • Effort blitzer, but unlikely to win in that area on talent alone
  • Tight hips prevent fluid transitions in man coverage
  • Will need to improve slipping blocks rather than taking them all on

Analysis: Josey Jewell is not an impressive athlete, but he is an impressive football player. He does not possess the size, speed, length you covet in a draft prospect and can be engulfed by NFL size at the next level. His lateral agility, change of direction and overall reactive athleticism is just average. He gives all out effort to every level of his game, especially when he blitzes, but he cannot win on effort alone. His tight lower half prevents him from excelling in coverage.

What the experts say: “I like him a lot. I think he will run faster than people think for sure. Give me a guy with his mindset and instincts and I can sell him to a coaching staff even if he’s not as big as they are looking for. His tape will win them over.” – AFC Director of Scouting
