The University of Memphis ended any speculation about whether or not Josh Pastner would return as basketball coach on Friday. They announced they’re committed to Josh. He will get an eighth season as Tigers head coach. Pastner is owed $10.6M by the University of Memphis.

Pastner and his Tigers are coming off of the second straight season without a post-season appearance. He is now 167-73 as Memphis Tigers head coach.

Earlier this week, Damon Stoudamire announced he was leaving the Tigers bench for a head coaching gig at Pacific.

Pastner is also facing the possibility of losing six or more players in the off-season.

The Tigers are coming off of mirror image seasons. They finished 19-15 this year. That was after ending the season winning four of their last five, including two straight in the American Athletic Tournament. Yet, not close enough for a sniff of post-season play.

Last season the Tigers went 18-14. Again, far from any possibility of post-season tournament play.

Pastner’s record from afar is impressive. A record of 167-73. Four NCAA Tournament appearances in seven years as head coach. However, he has won only two NCAA Tournament games in those previous seven years.

Next year. Not a phrase Tiger basketball fans are comfortable with. Not a phrase they are very tolerant of. But, because of the amazing structuring of Pastner’s contract, a phrase Tiger basketball fans will be handicapped by for at least until next year. Unfortunately, next year looks to be worse.
