Kawhi, Spurs surge through slump to take 3-2 lead on ferocious Grizzlies.
If you thought the Spurs were just going to run over the Grizzlies please retract those thoughts. Fast forward to Game 5 the Grizzlies started out hot and have been on fire ever since getting blown out in Game 2 sending David Fizdale to deliver one of the greatest rants in history! Even though at home you can feel that the Spurs were the desperate ones going into Game 5, and there could be absolutely no room for errors knowing that with each minute that goes by in the series only boosts the confidence of a battered Grizzlies team.
Kawhi Leonard wouldn’t go on to score 40 points again as this was more of a team effort, and they came through when he needed them the most. The Spurs shot and died by the three-ball in Game 4, and in Game 5 they couldn’t miss from beyond the arc. Leonard finished with 28 points and Patty Mills came up huge scoring 20 points a post-season high for Mills. Defensively the Spurs did a good job on everybody except for Mike Conley who’s just a man on a mission at this point.
Despite being up by as many as 15 at one point the Grizzlies buckled down on defense and cut the Spurs lead to five with nothing being taken for granted in this series. In the end Mike Conley was the only true hope for Memphis if they had any thought of stealing Game 5, but just like we saw with Russell Westbrook ultimately every superstar needs a supporting cast.
Game 6 heads back to Memphis on Thursday and yet again the pressure will be on both teams. The Spurs are hoping this series doesn’t go seven games, and the Grizzlies feel as if they aren’t given the respect they deserve and a team with the mindset can be a nightmare for anybody.
