The New York Knicks have signed former Washington Wizards center Kevin Seraphin to a one-year $2.8 million deal, reported by Sheridan Hoops. Seraphin is a solid signing who provides the Knicks with a capable center to backup Robin Lopez. The five-year veteran has only played for the Wizards in his career, averaging 6.4 PPG, 3.7 RPG in 16 minutes a night.

Playing on a one-year deal gives him a chance to prove he deserves a long-term contract next summer, and he will be in line to try to cash in when the television money floods the system. Until then, he will have to prove he is worth more than a one-year deal and will battle Kyle O’Quinn for minutes behind Lopez. Earlier in the offseason, Seraphin was quoted saying, “I definitely want a chance to be a starter, if I really want to learn — it’s easy to say, ‘Yeah, stay on the bench’ — but in basketball or any sport it’s best to be on the court.”

At 6’9 he is on the smaller side and lacks a decent mid-range jumper (O’Quinn is the better shooter of the two) meaning he will need to be ferocious down-low for the Knickerbockers in order to make a significant impact. At 25 years-old, he still has the potential to have a decent NBA career, but needs to show it on the court sooner, rather than later.
