Lance McCullers
(Rick Osentoski/USA TODAY Sports)

Despite a clean MRI on his shoulder, the Houston Astros are going to place Lance McCullers on the DL when the season begins. The DL move certainly suggests that, even if there is no serious issue there, the Astros are going to take their time easing McCullers back into action.

McCullers made 22 starts as a rookie last year, posting a 6-7 record with a 3.22 ERA and 129 strikeouts over 125 and two-thirds innings. He’s an important part of Houston’s plans, but it’s certainly more important for him to be sure to be available in the summer than it is in the spring.

In terms of fantasy baseball, I still have faith in McCullers coming back and performing like a Top 20 pitcher. His stuff is that good. The Astros as a team have the pitching depth to withstand this injury, as long as it’s nothing serious.

With Dallas Keuchel and Colin McHugh locked in as the No.1 and 2 starters, newly signed Astro Doug Fister will team up with Mike Fiers and veteran Scott Feldman to round out the rotation to start the year.

The start of the MLB season is less than three weeks away and MFST will have you covered for all your baseball and fantasy news.
