Legends of Tomorrow: Fellowship of the Spear

legends of tomorrow fellowship of the spear

The Legends traveled back to World War 1 in this episode to try to find a way to destroy the Spear of Destiny. Spoilers for Legends of Tomorrow from this point on.

So earlier on this season we saw George Lucas show up and Lucas was inspired by the Legends in a great way to create both Star Wars and Indiana Jones, the show took another turn down that direction this week as J.R.R. Tolkien is brought in and gains some of his ideas about Lord of the Rings from the team, it was a lot of fun but while that part of the episode was great and all, it wasn’t what we were all looking forward to, the return of Captain Cold!

So this episode marked the official return of Leonard Snart to the show in his full glory, it wasn’t a flashback or hallucination, it’s really him. Unless I missed a part at some point of the episode, I don’t think they explained exactly how he’s back or which version of him it is. From the way he talks it’s kind of clear that this is the Snart that sacrificed himself for the team at the end of last season, so that sorta asks the question of if the Legion rescued him right before he died?

One issue about Snart’s return is kind of bothering me, it’s why the hell is he helping the Legion over the Legends? So yes he’s supposed to be a criminal at heart but when he left the show last season they kind of made it clear that he felt like a part of the team and he was happy with what he was doing. I do like how he convinced Mick to join up with them, it’s kind of obvious that he’s going to double cross the Legion next episode but Snart did make some compelling arguments, the team really has been treating Mick kind of badly and yes they’ve warmed up to him but there has always kind of been that distrust among them, he’s always been treated as an outsider.

One of my favorite parts of the episode is when the team goes to the Vanishing Point to grab the Spear, it was when Firestorm used his transmutation power to turn the box containing the Spear into jelly beans, that was crazy but such a cool thing. It was also nice seeing the team able to take the Spear so easily, it shows that both teams are evenly matched and are constantly one upping each other. Eobard’s freak out when he realized that the team is taking the Spear was a nice little scene and shows that he’ll need more than superspeed to get the spear back.

The Legends finally retrieve the one thing they need to destroy the Spear of Destiny, the blood of Jesus Christ which actually kind of makes sense, but of course it gets destroyed before the team has a chance to use it. I like to think that the reason Mick goes with the Legion is because he knows they’re going to change reality and that if he’s there with them then he’ll still have a memory of the original timeline and be pretty much the only one who can stop them which actually kind of makes him the hero of the season and if he succeeds, it’d be the perfect way to completely solidify him as a member of the team in the Legends’ eyes.

This episode set up the final two very nicely and I’m definitely looking forward to what comes next.

THE VERDICT

8/10     Legends of Tomorrow gave another fun episode as we travel into the final episodes.
