‘Legion’ Recap and Review: “Chapter 12”
Last week on Legion, David and Cary worked their way through the minds of their friends after the Monk infected them. After the Monk refused to give away the location of Farouk’s body and threw himself off of the roof, David found Syd lost in her mind. Here’s a recap of “Chapter 12”.
In Syd’s mind maze, David witnessed her birth and the early years of her life where both she and her mother had to learn and adjust to not being able to touch. As a teenager, Syd went through a punk phase and stopped wearing her gloves. One night, she went out to a party. There, she bumped into people and found herself strapped down to a bed in an asylum looking room.
When David encountered her in the same museum she went to with her mother, he tried to guess her deepest desire and failed. She told him to go back and watch it again and he does just that. The sequence of her birth and aging played again. This time around David noticed all of the unpleasant moments like how she got bullied. She and David met at the museum and he guessed wrong again, and again, and again.
In the outside world, everyone affected by the monk woke up all at once and the rush to the bathroom at Division 3 wasn’t pretty. The only outliers are Syd and David who remained “asleep”. According to Cary, they were awake but their brain waves were different from everyone else. After making a speech about how he loves her despite everything she’s done, David was not happy when Syd sent him back to the start of her life again.
Like before, we got more details as the story played again. This time we witnessed the night Syd went out to the party and how her mother ignored her until she drank her leftover wine and almost slammed the cup down. Her mother’s boyfriend winked at her and Syd shyly smiled back.
Later, Syd used her powers to switch places with her mother and have sex with him. In the middle of the encounter, she transferred back to her body and both her mother and her boyfriend were horrified to find Syd in the shower. The man was arrested and the relationship between mother and daughter was never the same.
When David met up with Syd again he answered that it wasn’t about her wanting anything or the pain she felt, but the fact that it all made her stronger, it made her a fighter. All she wanted is for her and David not to try and live a fairytale world where romance saved the day, but in a world where they fight not only for their love, but to face what’s to come.
Their return to the real world doesn’t stay tranquil for long when Division 3 guards drag Lenny Brusker into the base.
Review of Legion, “Chapter 12”
I loved how this episode was written. We didn’t just get Syd’s backstory all at once, instead, the writers had us learn something new each time around so we didn’t get bored with seeing her timeline over and over again. I can’t think of very many characters in television or film that we’ve seen at so many different stages of life. With their relationship, it’s no surprise that Syd’s maze was the most difficult for David to get through. The only thing that was unclear is why David and Syd stayed “asleep” after the monk’s death.
The return of Lenny at the end of the episode was a perfect cliffhanger for “Chapter 13”. I doubt that Farouk gave the woman a new body and set her free because he’s a nice person.
I’m giving this episode of Legion an 8 out of 10. It was a bit of a filler, but I was happy to learn more about Syd.
Legion airs Tuesdays at 10 PM EST on FX.
