‘Legion’ Recap and Review: “Chapter 17”
Last week, Legion centered around everyone following commands from Farouk or David. “Chapter 17” kicked off Clark with waking up and a look at Melanie just before she knocked him out. Cue a thirteen days earlier flashback.
Instead of focusing on Clark, we saw that Melanie spent most of her time before David’s return smoking and living in a haze. On the morning of David’s return, Melanie gave Syd a rant about their men going off and leaving them to save the world or do other things. Syd could only watch as her friend went on, interrupting every time she tried to speak.
One night, Oliver appeared in Melanie’s room and she pulled a gun on him. He showed her younger self in a mirror and wooed her into lowering her weapon, sealing his plan with a kiss. In her younger body, Melanie appeared at the same house where Farouk was staying. Stuck in her mind, Melanie was confronted with a scene of her younger self sitting by Oliver’s bedside when he was trapped in the scuba diving suit. Oliver appeared and told her that she should have burned his body.
Kerry tried to get Melanie back into the swings of things but Melanie only went on about how either Kerry or Cary could be a fantasy in the other’s mind. She concluded that there wasn’t a world to save because it’s all in her head.
In the present, Kerry and Cary’s implanted thoughts from David kicked in. They grabbed the weapon needed and rolled out in a blue car that they saw in their thoughts. Elsewhere, Lenny went to one of her old drug dens. The inhabitants were excited to have her back and threw a huge party. In the midst of indulging and finding herself a lay, she saw Amy amongst the crowd and flashes of David’s plan.
She woke up with Amy standing over her. Lenny apologized and warned her that she was going to see a lot of wild stuff sharing her body. Amy repeatedly asked her if she was a good person, freaking Lenny out.
Kerry and Cary arrived at the drop-off point for the weapon before heading into a nearby restaurant. Lenny continued to see flashes of David’s plan, including the Blue Octopus restaurant where the weapon was left. Amy appeared to her again and urged her to help David. She even taunted Lenny about her feelings for him.
It turned out the house Lenny was at was right next door to the Blue Octopus. She climbed into the unlocked car and was teleported to the desert. With a tracker on the weapon, Cary decided to follow her. After mentally assuring Oliver that David was coming alone, Melanie left Division Three to meet up with him.
Review of Legion “Chapter 17”
With a cast of characters as interesting as the one Legion has, it was nice to spend time away from David. Of course, this episode builds up tension leading into the coming fight with Farouk. I love scenes between Kerry and Cary because they’re especially intriguing because of their connection but have drastic differences between them.
The story behind Melanie’s takeover by Farouk felt a little foggy even with the flashbacks, but I’m interested to see what happens in the coming episode since she’s now with Oliver and has informed him that David is coming on his own. Was she really ignorant of the others in motion and Syd’s presence with David, or did she lie showing that she’s not completely under control?
I’m giving the episode a 7.5 out of 10. A bit of a filler for build up, but not bad.
Legion airs Tuesdays at 10 PM EST.
