Leicester City

5000-1. Those were the odds for second year Premier League team Leicester to win the Barclays Premier League title.

In what is being regarded as the greatest Cinderella story in sports history, Leicester City won their first Premier League title in their 132-year history as a club. They became the sixth different club to win the Premier League title.

What’s different about this title run, is the quality of the roster Leicester had. Their biggest stars were forward Jamie Vardy and midfielder Riyad Mahrez, who aren’t the star quality names like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. But this isn’t a roster that just snagged these players in one season and won it. This team was built from the Championship League and was given the time to form a chemistry that was unmatched by any team in the Premier League. With Claudio Raneri as manager, Leicester secured the Premier League with a style and class that teams pay millions for and that Leicester spent little.

Going into the off-season, Leicester will be faced with difficult tasks according to their roster. There are teams who are looking to purge the squad of its best players. Leicester will have the opportunity to cash in and perhaps build a better squad for next season but there lies a great risk in doing so. Breaking up this team means breaking up the chemistry of the squad, which again, is the valuable contribution that won Leicester the Premier League title. Leicester will have a great transfer budget to work with when the 2016-2017 season begins. They could land some great talent to improve the squad rather than send so much away for grandiose amounts of money.

Jamie Vardy’s release clause of $28 million was activated by Arsenal last week in what has begun the battle of who Leicester can keep on their roster and who will be too tempted to cash in and play for bigger clubs and bigger money. Mahrez will be sought after heavily with his ability to play the wing, a stellar asset to those across Europe. It’s been rumored that clubs like FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris-Saint Germain, and Bayern Munich are vying for the player to bring a presence to their right wing attacks.

For what Leicester City can bring in and sell out, their goal must not be to survive the upcoming Premier League season. The goal is to survive the coming transfer window. Big clubs can make or break a humble club like Leicester City. Claudio Raneri and company must prepare for the worst while also preparing to defend the title with the best players they can acquire.
