Lightning offense electric in Game 6, Tampa Bay advance
After taking a 3-0 series lead against the Montreal Canadiens, the Tampa Bay Lightning found themselves in a fight for their playoff lives. The Canadiens won Game 4 and Game 5 to make this series a lot more interesting, but the Lightning offense proved to be too much in Game 6. They are headed to the Eastern Conference Final and will play the winner of the Washington Capitals/New York Rangers series, which is headed to Game 7 tonight.
Game 6, as well as the series, was a hard-fought battle between two teams that rely on consistent play from their goal keepers, solid defense, and quick hitting offense. The Lightning opened up scoring in the first period on a goal by RW Nikita Kucherov, and added two more in the second period on goals by Ondrej Palat and Steven Stamkos. The Canadiens finally got on the board with a third period goal by Max Pacioretty, but it was nowhere near enough on Tuesday night. Nikita Kucherov also added an empty net goal to seal the win and help the Lightning advance.
The main story for Tampa Bay this postseason though has been the offensive surge by Kucherov and Tyler Johnson, with help from Steven Stamkos. Johnson has notched eight goals this postseason, Kucherov six, and Stamkos has three. Tyler Johnson had six goals in the six games against the Detroit Red Wings, and Kucherov decided that it was his turn in the series against the Canadiens, in which he tallied six goals in six games. Remember that the Canadiens have a stud in net, Carey Price, so this was not an easy task for the Lightning offense, but they prevailed nonetheless.
What’s next for the Lightning? The possibility of facing the Rangers, whom they are 3-0-0 against, or the Capitals (1-2-0 against), after each of these teams face off in Game 7 tonight. I think that the Lightning don’t care at this point, especially with their electrifying offense, but the Eastern Conference Final should be good, regardless of who squares off against Tampa Bay.
