Los Angeles Lakers offseason makeover
The Los Angeles Lakers season has started disastrously as they are now 2-14 and have dropped their last six games. Rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell has struggled mightily and hasn’t panned out as well as the Lakers’ have hoped. Roy Hibbert has been quite a disappointment, and Nick Young continues to take shots away from Russell, Clarkson and Randle while being paid over $5 million a year and doesn’t fit the Lakers’ long-term plans.
Here are some looks at would could have been a better offseason for the Lakers
1. NBA Draft (Picks: 2,27,34):
Select Jahlil Okafor 2nd Overall over D’Angelo Russell,
Select R.J Hunter 27th overall,
Select Joseph Young 34th overall
2. Offseason: Free Agency/Trade:
Sign Rajon Rondo
Sign Lou Williams
Sign Brandon Bass,
Trade for Roy Hibbert and try to include Nick Young and his remaining contract
3. New Head Coach:
Fire Byron Scott
Hire Mark Madsen as interim HC
Search for Long Term HC
Starting Lineup Opening Day:
6th Man: Jahlil Okafor
7th Man: Lou Williams
Starting Lineup End Of Season:
6th Man: Lou Williams
7th Man: Roy Hibbert
Rondo has formed back to All-Star form averaging nearly a triple-double, posting 12.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 11.0 APG. He and Randle/Okafor would form a dangerous pair of pick and roll duos. Okafor with an advanced offensive game at this stage of his career would be set up well by Rondo. Randle, known for his versatility could as well play the pick and roll with Okafor with an advanced ball handling skills for a forward. Well he would be the ball handler and could either take it to the hole and either dish it to Okafor or go in strong. And finally Rondo and Randle, as Randle can pick and pop and hit from the elbow, or roll and drive strong to the basket with the set up from the wizardry of Rondo.
Russell has disappointed early averaging just 10.4 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 3.0 APG and has often butted heads with head coach Byron Scott. As well as sitting out of the fourth quarter in several games this season. Rondo would be an obvious upgrade over Russell, and Okafor would develop to be anchor alongside young core players Randle and Clarkson.
Bass continue to be mentor for Randle, as a seasoned veteran with similar abilities as Randle. Bass can help show Randle offensive tips, and how to help him defensively. Hibbert could help Okafor, as the Blue Devil has trouble on the defensive end. Hibbert, the 2-time All-Star and former runner-up in DPOY award in 2014 could help mentor the young big man on the defensive end.
Lou Williams, RJ Hunter and Joseph Young would come off the bench as scoring threats, and outside shooters to spread the floor from the second unit. RJ Hunter would have been a better selection than Larry Nance Jr. as Hunter has a sweet jumper, and good range. Young would be a good young scoring spark off the bench as he’s an aggressive guard.
The Byron Scott experimented has run its course and the Lakers should move on from the former player. Scott has accumulated a 23-75 record in two seasons and looks to lead the Purple and Gold into another lottery selection for the second consecutive year. The Lakers, who are clearly in rebuild mode and are tying to develop young talent are having difficulty doing just that as Scott is known to favor veterans over younger players. Lastly, Scott has yet to reach his guys and the Lakers don’t trust each other and that starts at the top with the head coach. The Lakers should move on from Scott, and hire Mark Madsen as interim HC and look for a long-term coach that fits the youth movement bill, and is a player-coach.
If the Lakers have made the slight adjustments and drafted a big with Okafor signed a guard in Rondo, and found a new head coach then their season could be different, and they could be in playoff contention rather than headed for another lottery selection and bottoming out in the Western Conference.
One can only imagine…
