Malcom Brown- Defensive Tackle- Texas
Size: 6’2 320lbs

Strengths:

  • Athletic- deceiving quickness
  • Improved every game
  • Good read-and-react defender- diagnoses plays quickly
  • Quick hands

Analysis: Brown came on strong in 2014, and improved drastically through out his career as a Longhorn.  Brown is athletic and deceivingly quick, which allows him to penetrate into the backfield when single teamed.  Brown can read and diagnose running plays like a linebacker–even though he is on the defensive line engaged to an offensive lineman.  That is a rare quality in defensive tackles, this allows him to lose blockers and keep himself in plays that most d-tackles could not.

Need to improve:

  • Needs to be more physical
  • Can’t hold up to double teams
  • Needs to learn a variety of pass rush moves
  • Needs to add strength/muscle

Analysis: Brown improved his play on the field in 2014, but he needs to add strength to compete with NFL offensive lineman.  Effort level has been questioned, and the term “soft” applies to Brown while watching him on tape.  In order to make an impact on all three downs at the next level, Brown will need to show a better ability to rush the passer.

Round prediction: 2nd round
