Man Crush Monday: Anthony Davis
After Saturday’s NBA match ups you would not have been able to convince me that Sunday would yield an even better performance. Seeing Hassan Whiteside haul down 20 rebounds against the Wizards, and Damian Lillard scoring 51 points in taking down the Warriors was satisfactory. The next day one guy would do both, and then some. This week’s Man Crush Monday goes to Anthony Davis.
In a win over the Detroit Pistons, Davis scored 59 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. He scored 19 points in the final ten minutes and as a whole went 24 for 34 shooting, even making two three pointers. Davis played like the monster athlete everyone knows he is, despite having somewhat of an inconsistent season. Jrue Holiday came off the bench to score 20 points, and he was the only other Pelican player to score in double figures. The fact that it was a five point game at the end shows that it was a game where Davis needed to go off in order for his team to get the win. I am sure no one expected him to do exactly what he did though.
Davis joins Shaquille O’Neal and Wilt Chamberlain as the only players with at least 55 points and 20 rebounds in a game in NBA history. He also joins O’Neal and Chris Webber as the only players with 50 points and 20 rebounds since 1983. After making the playoffs last year, the Pelicans have struggled this season under first year head coach Alvin Gentry. Gentry is a guy I loved when he coached my Phoenix Suns and I know he can turn this team around. If Davis can get some help on a consistent basis then he can get his team back to the playoffs, maybe even this year.
