Man Crush Monday: Buddy Hield
March Madness is here once again and just like every year, the games are full of excitement, anticipation, and drama. Nothing is for certain when it comes to March tournament basketball and the fact that any team can win on any given day makes it arguably the purest tournament in sports.
This week’s Man Crush Monday, to me, has to be Oklahoma Sooners guard Buddy Hield.
In some light, a two-seeded team (Oklahoma Sooners) and it’s number one scorer (Hield) wouldn’t be much of a surprise but in this case, and after what happened to Michigan State on Friday, Hield and his Sooners must be applauded for their efforts in making the Sweet 16.
The Sooners were tested in their round of 64 game by a Bakersfield Roadrunners team that started the game off up 8-0 and held Oklahoma scoreless for the first 2 1/2 minutes. Oklahoma eventually led by seven points at the half. Hield was 4-7 in the first half but he never forced the issue. He let the game come to him.
In the second half, Hield scored 16 of his 27 points in the final 13:23 to help lead the Sooners to the win.
On Sunday, they faced a hungry VCU team that came off of an impressive win against Oregon State in the first round.
Hield sat a little bit in the first half due to foul trouble and went into halftime having shot 2-7 from the field. He got it going in the second half to finish the game with 36 points, 7 rebounds, and only one turnover as the Sooners squeaked out a very tough win to advance them to the Sweet 16.
Hield shot 8-for-14 vs Bakersfield, 3-for-6 from 3-point land, to go along with two steals and two blocks.
Against VCU, he shot 11-20 and 6-for-14 from three.
Oklahoma faces Texas A&M on March 24th.
