Man Crush Monday: David Johnson
Yesterday we saw some great performances from a few players that have already taken home the Man Crush title. This week it goes to Arizona Cardinals rookie running back David Johnson. Flexed into Sunday night, the Cardinals went into Philadelphia and humbled the Eagles by letting Johnson run all over them. He finished the game with 29 carries for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Spending the early part of the season as more of a pass catching utility type back, Johnson moved into the starting role when Chris Johnson went down with an injury. With Andre Ellington once again battling injuries, the rookie from Northern Iowa has taken the starting job and doesn’t show any signs of losing it. As a third round pick, Johnson was to come in and provide depth at the running back position since Ellington has been fairly injury prone. However, Bruce Arians knows how to spark competition in practice, and signing veteran Chris Johnson only helped to create more of it. Having all these backs has proven to be a good problem to have, since it is a difficult position to stay healthy in.
After last night’s game David Johnson has 517 yards and 7 touchdowns on the year. This may not seem like a lot, but keep in mind that last night was the first time he was given such a workload. He will certainly have a chance to show he is consistent since Chris Johnson will not be able to return until a possible Super Bowl appearance. Ellington is battling turf toe and is week to week, but after the rookie’s explosive game there is no doubt he will have the majority of carries going forward. With two games left in the season and with Arizona clinching their division last night, expect the ground game momentum to continue for David Johnson.
