Man Crush Monday: Draymond Green
The Golden State Warriors keep inching towards that all-time record of 73 regular season wins with a victory over the Knicks last night. On a very rare off night for Steph Curry, other players picked up the slack. Klay Thompson had 34 points, but another player filled up the stat sheet as well as the defensive lane. That was this week’s Man Crush Monday Draymond Green.
Green posted his ninth triple double of the season with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. He also played great defense against Kristaps Porzingis, who had 14 points but was 3 for 8 from the field. Green got Porzingis into foul trouble early, and the scoring duties for New York were squarely on Carmelo Anthony’s shoulders. This would not be enough to keep the Warriors and Green from posting their 44th win of the season. Green also had 2 steals and 2 blocks during the game.
For the season Green is averaging 14.6 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. Some may point to the system that he plays in and yes there might be something to that, but what a system it is. As a Suns fan I enjoyed watching a similar system a few years back during the Nash years that saw Amare Stoudemire post similar numbers in a similar role. Green’s defensive game and rebounding are better overall however, and so is this Warrior’s team. Even though their identity is still very much built around that explosive backcourt, it is looking like that max deal Green signed in the offseason is paying off. It remains to be seen if 73 wins is in their future, but another championship run certainly seems inevitable at this rate.
