Jose Fernandez
(Miami Herald)

Alrighty then! My first crack at the prestigious Man Crush Monday segment on My Fantasy Sports Talk. I have had you covered along with a few other writers on MFST on all of the MMA action this weekend. While it would be easy to give this honor to the new Middleweight champion Michael Bisping, I am going to change things up a bit and go back to my roots. Baseball. Today there are plenty of great pitchers in MLB. But this past weekend one guy that really stood out to me was Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez. Though the career of Fernandez hasn’t always been smooth sailing, he holds the distinction of a pitcher that is a member of the long  list of others that have had the fearsome Tommy John surgery. But since his return Fernandez has completely bounced back.

The 2016 season has been very kind to him with his numbers resting at  74.2 innings pitched, 9 wins, 110 strikeouts/25 walks, and most importantly a 2.53 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. In 11 starts this season, Fernandez has had double-digit strikeout totals in four of his last six starts, most recently yesterday, throwing 7 shutout innings and 14 strikeouts. He allowed four hits without walking a batter with 73/100 pitches called for strikes. Nothing like a 1-0 victory over the division-rival New York Mets. If Fernandez continues to pitch like this a few years down the line he could be the next starting pitcher to make $20-25 million per season. The Marlins currently sit at 30-27, four games behind the first place Washington Nationals. While the Marlins might not win the division you can bet that Jose Fernandez will help the come close. When healthy, Fernandez continues to prove he is one of the best young phenom’s in baseball.
