My home track of PIR (Phoenix International Raceway) was the stage this past weekend for some good old fashion racing and an all too familiar winner in victory lane. This week’s Man Crush Monday is Kevin Harvick, who once again took the checkered flag in Phoenix at the Good Sam 500 for his fifth win out of the last six visits to the desert track. Harvick likes racing at PIR, and after a close finish like yesterday’s it’s easy to see why.

Harvick and Carl Edwards kept it close the final two laps and only a tenth of a second separated them when they crossed the finish line. Harvick led a total of 139 laps, but those last two are what counted the most. He boxed out Edwards for just long enough to get his first win of the season. Harvick went into the green-white-checkered restart with old tires, but was confident he would be alright. Given the history he has with the track no one could blame him for it, although his crew chief Rodney Childers was still a little worried. The trust he put in his driver paid off, and I’m sure Childers feels much better today.

You have to give it to Carl Edwards though, what a close finish. These are the kind of races that fans watch for in the stands and at home. At my first race and first trip to PIR almost ten years ago, I watched a Harvick victory. I do not get a chance to watch every race but I do know that when NASCAR comes to PIR twice a year, there is a good chance that Kevin Harvick is going to pull into victory lane afterwards and drink a bottle of coke.
