Man Crush Monday: Kirk Cousins
This is the first edition of “Man Crush Monday” in which I will be covering an athlete from the previous weekend who excelled at their game. The honor of the first man crush goes to Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins. As a Dallas fan it pains me to admit it, but I wish he was backing up Romo right now instead of anyone else on their roster. During the pre-game shows Sunday morning I watched a group of experts rip Cousins and Coach Jay Gruden, saying that he wasn’t good enough and that it will ultimately be Gruden’s mistake for hanging his hopes on Cousins over Robert Griffin III. A few hours later Cousins was rallying his team back from down 24-0 to Tampa Bay. He threw for 317 yards, 3 touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown. The Redskins won the game 31-30. I took particular notice of Cousins’ stat line because he is on my fantasy team, on the bench.
I like RG3, and I still root for him to one day be a viable quarterback in this league, but I think the media keeps wanting him to succeed because of all that was given up to get him. Yes he was rookie of the year and yes he is a great athlete, but he obviously was not working out for this team. Cousins still has ways to go in regards to being consistent and his numbers for the season as a whole aren’t stellar, but this is about what he did yesterday. If he can give this effort every week and try not to make mistakes, then Washington may have their guy. Now if they get that running game situated and a healthy DeSean Jackson, they could be a real threat. I’m not supposed to want that to happen since they are a division rival, but Redskins fans have been patient long enough.
