Manhattan vs Rider Preview and Prediction
Manhattan vs Rider Preview
An inconsistent non-conference schedule had many doubting MAAC Preseason favorite Rider, but once conference play started, a flip-switched in the Broncs lineup.
Through four MAAC games, Rider is yet to lose and they host the cellar-dweller of the conference, Manhattan in a Saturday night affair. Rider and Manhattan are meeting for the 53rd time, with the Broncs leading the all-time series, 29-23. Rider has won the last four meetings.
The Broncs (9-7, 4-0) compiled season highs in points (104), points in a single half (68), field-goal percentage (.612), and single-half field-goal percentage (.737), Jan. 13 at Niagara–a game they won 104-84. Six Broncs scored in double figures for the first time since Feb. 2011.
2nd Half Warriors
Rider has been outscored by 23 points combined in the first halves of their four MAAC games. I was at the game against Canisius, where the Griffs dominated first half action and had an 11-point first half lead only to lose by nine points when the game ended.
In total the Broncs are +58 in the second half against MAAC opponents.
For Manhattan (4-13, 2-3) the team was picked to finish last in the MAAC this season and only amassed two non-conference wins before league play began–but the team has had a solid showing going 2-3 in their last five MAAC games.
Last game, the Jaspers needed their young players to play like upper-classmen down the stretch and they did just that…
Freshman Samir Stewart buried a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining for his only points of the game, freshman Warren Williams scored 15 and hit a pair of big shots down the stretch and Manhattan rallied past Saint Peter’s 58-56 on Thursday night.
Who’s the guy?
Manhattan does not have one player averaging more than 8.5 points per game and they team plays 11 players at least 13.2 minutes per game.
What does that mean? This team is young and head coach Steve Masiello does not have a group of guys that are just better, or more experienced than the rest. He would rather keep legs fresh, playing his usual full-court press, subbing guys in-and-out constantly.
