Marcus Morris, Reggie Bullock and Danny Granger for 2nd Round Pick
In a cap saving move the Phoenix Suns moved Marcus Morris, Reggie Bullock and Danny Granger to the Detroit Pistons for a single 2020 second round pick. On the surface this looks like a horrible trade, but the trade wasn’t done in hopes of receiving some sort of equal value out of that second rounder, it was done to free cap space in hopes of signing top free agent LaMarcus Aldridge. The move frees up $8.3 million of cap space for use in signing Aldridge.
On the other end the Detroit Pistons gain some interesting assets for virtually nothing. Marcus Morris brings what Stan Van Gundy loves, three-point shooting. While not the best shooter he has had stretches of 44% from beyond the arc. At 6’9” Morris provides serviceable defense to go along with his 10.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg, and 1.6 apg, at only $5 million a year he’s a great pick up. Reggie Bullock is still a young question mark in this league. The 24-year-old shooting guard hasn’t received much time to develop much with first the Clippers who drafted him in 2013 or the Suns who were set on their guard rotation. Bullock could be developed in Detroit but chances are he is just a bench warmer. The final piece of the deal, 32-year-old NBA veteran Danny Granger. Granger has suffered from injuries for the past few years, he won’t be seeing much play time, if any, but he is a renowned locker room presence. The ex-Indiana star could be an invaluable mentor to some of Detroit’s younger players. The Piston’s made a great opportunistic pick up, while the Sun’s risk being burned if LaMarcus doesn’t sign with them.
