Several managers have been busy working the phones trying to sign free agents or complete trades to improve their teams. But on the night before Thanksgiving, the Mariners’ and Diamondbacks’ manager Jerry Dipoto and Mike Hazen swung a five-player deal centered around Jean Segura to the M’s and Taijuan Walker to the Dbacks.

Mariners Receive: Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger, Zac Curtis

Diamondbacks Receive: Taijuan Walker, Ketel Marte

The Mariners needed an upgrade at shortstop and dangled one of their most attractive assets in Taijuan Walker to get their guy Jean Segura. Segura, 26, marks as an instant upgrade, as he enjoyed a breakout season in his only season for the Diamondbacks, reaching career highs in BA (.319), OBP (.368), homeruns (20), and RBIs (64). Segura looks to be the Mariners’ table setter, as he looks to continue building off his strong 2016 season.

Along with Segura, the Mariners will receive two prospects in Mitch Haniger, 25, and Zac Curtis, 24. Haniger, an outfielder got his first taste of the big leagues in 2016, batting .229 along with 5 homeruns in 123 plate appearances and Curtis, a lefty pitcher who struggled compiling a 6.75 ERA over 13.1 innings of work in the majors.

As for the Arizona Diamondbacks, they will be receiving former top prospect, Taijuan Walker, 24 who went 8-11, with a 4.22 ERA, and struck out 119 batters in 134.1 innings in 2016 for the Mariners. Walker, arguably one the top young promising pitchers in the league, has struggled with injuries and inconsistencies derailing him from tapping into his potential. But just 24 years old, Walker looks to build off a solid 2016 season, and slide alongside Zach Greinke and Shelby Miller atop the Diamondbacks’ rotation.

Along with Walker, the Diamondbacks will receive the switch-hitting SS Ketel Marte, who will replace Segura up the middle. In his second season for the Mariners, Marte batted .259, driving in 33 runs and stealing 11 bases, but struggled defensively in 119 games in 2016. But only 23 years old, Marte still has time to develop and turn things around with a change of scenery in Arizona.
