Mark Andrews Draft Profile

Mark Andrews draft profile

Strengths:

  • Red zone specialist
  • Body leverage
  • Solid hands
  • Contested catches
  • Crafty route runner
  • Solid footwork

Analysis: Mark Andrews was Baker Mayfield’s safety net at Oklahoma and put up solid numbers throughout his career (62 receptions 958 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017). He is a legitimate red zone weapon averaging one touchdown every five receptions. He is crafty in his route running and uses his body to leverage positioning at the top of the route. Not overly sudden or quick, but finds ways to uncover. Andrews has shown the ability to handle complex routes. Plays with consistent pace through route breaks to optimize separation in tight spaces. Has learned to catch defenders on his hip and keep them there through the catch. A quarterback’s friend with ability to drop and save the low throw as well as secure contested catches in traffic. His footwork is solid and has the ability to make defenders miss.

Weaknesses:

  • Lacks legit speed
  • Don’t ask him to block
  • Acceleration
  • Hand usage is poor
  • Lacks aggression

Analysis: Mark Andrews despite his size is really not an in-line tight end. He is an atrocious blocker who lacks the initial effort to even attempt to make an impact on the running game. Lacks aggression. His hand usage and angles to his work as a blocker are poor. Big but unreliable in running game. Doesn’t have the acceleration to pull away from man coverage down the field. Gives up on plays he is not a part of.

What the scouts say: “He’s a great big slot receiver. That’s it. He won’t block at all so what do you have other than a big slot who is an average athlete? I gave him a Day 3 grade.” — AFC regional scout
