Marshall’s top returning safety, AJ Leggett, is no longer on the football team as of today. The school announced his departure late Wednesday afternoon and would give no further details. Whatever it was must have been somewhat serious considering that takes away one of the best safeties in the conference from the Herd defense.

How will that impact the Marshall defense?

Well for starters, Leggett was the top returning safety for the Herd. He had eight interceptions in his career leading up to this season. Leggett was injured much of camp, however, and has only really appeared in a few plays this season. It may not seem like a huge deal now, in that case, but I think down the road it creates a lot of depth issues in the Herd secondary.

Taking his place will most likely be sophomore Kendall Gant, the 4-star recruit from Lakeland, Florida. This is good news for Marshall. Gant was receiving offers from many SEC schools and ended up at Marshall instead. He now has his chance to shine, and he should be able to make the most of it.

As far as the rest of the defense goes, this may not have a huge impact. Gant won’t be a huge drop-off in coverage if any at all, and the Herd defense knows how to take care of business.

Marshall’s next game is at Kent State on September 26th. I’ll have more on the subject should the school release further information at a later time.
