Marshall star Devon Johnson may surprise Herd Nation this Christmas
It’s been two months since Marshall fans have seen Devon Johnson on the field. His last appearance was a three carry, 83 yard game at Florida Atlantic. That third play was possibly the last of his college career. Or was it?
Johnson’s Instagram post Friday afternoon indicated that he may be making a comeback just in time for the Herd’s bowl game in St. Petersburg. The video he posted on social media was of him sprinting on a treadmill. Rockhead put this as his caption: “The grind never stops! A surprise might just be happening. #BeHerd”
About a week or two ago, news came out that Johnson had been selected to play in the East/West Shrine Game. This began the speculation for me. If he could try to make an appearance then, why not try to suit up one more time for the Marshall fans that love him more than anyone? Well, he might just do it.
The other hope for Herd fans seems to be a medical redshirt. Devon played his last game of the season on October 17th, about the halfway point. While teammate and highly praised offensive lineman Clint Van Horn is being advocate for, the University said they weren’t trying to get Johnson one. It is always possible, however, that the surprise is one more season for the star running back from Richlands, VA.
My guess is Marshall fans will be disappointed on that one, but here’s to hoping we all get to see him suit up one more time this year. Johnson has accounted for 555 yards and 5 TD’s on just 84 carries during his shortened 2015 campaign. Since moving to the running back position last season, Devon Johnson has run for over 2300 yards and 25 touchdowns on less than 300 carries. Some, including myself, thought that he could make a very good case to be sitting in New York when this college football season came to an end. Unfortunately injuries had a different idea.
So will Herd Nation be getting a late Christmas present from their star player? The chance is certainly there, and we are all praying for Rockhead’s quick recovery. The offense could definitely use a spark against a stingy UConn defense come December 26th.
Best of luck, Devon. Be Herd this holiday season.
