Marshall survives against UTEP, advances to semifinals
Marshall junior Ryan Taylor hit the go-ahead game-winning layup with three seconds left to give the Herd a 87-85 victory over the UTEP Miners in the second round of the Conference USA Basketball Tournament. Taylor had 21 points and 14 rebounds for 3rd seeded Marshall (17-15), who will move on to the semifinals to take on 2nd seeded Middle Tennessee (22-9) tonight at 6:30 on CBS Sports Network.
Marshall had five players get to double digits against UTEP. In fact, James Kelly and Ryan Taylor both picked up a double-double, making it the first time since 2011 that two Herd players managed a double-double in one game. Austin Loop had 18 points, all of which came from his 6 of 13 shooting from behind the arc. James Kelly had 13 points and 11 rebounds in his somewhat short night. Jon Elmore and Terrance Thompson added 12 and 11 respectively for the Herd.
Quick Game Recap
James Kelly got into foul trouble early against the Miners, picking up two fouls before the under 16 media timeout. Kelly was replaced by sophomore Terrance Thompson, who made a huge impact in his time on the court. Thompson had a career night with 11 points and 8 rebounds, nearly making it three Marshall players with a double-double.
The game was back-and-forth just as it was expected to be. UTEP led Marshall 42-39 at the half following a 7-0 run in the final few minutes. The Herd got out to another flat start in this one, shooting just 37.1% in the first half to UTEP’s 51.5%. Unlike their last outing, the Herd didn’t fall down by 23. In fact, Marshall never trailed by more than 7 the entire night.
The Miners grabbed their biggest lead of the night early in the second half, scoring four straight points and jumping out to a 46-39 lead over the Herd. It wasn’t too long after that Marshall had pulled it back within a basket.
As the game started to roll into the final minutes, Herd junior Ryan Taylor took over. Taylor had six of Marshall’s last eight points, including the go-ahead layup to give the Herd a victory.
Up Next for the Herd
Marshall moves on to face Middle Tennessee tonight at 6:30 in the semifinals of the 2016 Conference USA tournament. The Marshall/MTSU winner will face the WKU/Old Dominion winner in the championship game.
The Herd split their meetings with the Blue Raiders in the regular season. Giddy Potts and Reggie Upshaw will be Marshall’s biggest problems tonight. Both Conference USA semifinal match-ups look to be promising and full of offense.
