Marta scores first goal as Brazil opens up Group E play
As expected, Brazil collected a fairly easy 2-0 win against a Korea Republic team that looked severely outmatched. And as everyone had anticipated, Marta dazzled with her footwork and trickery throughout, scoring a goal on a penalty kick to put Brazil up 2-0. Korea Republic showed flashes of intense work in the Brazilian penalty box in the match, but could not muster up enough to score on the better-than-expected Brazil defense.
At times, Brazil looked like they were toying with Korea Republic, which is no surprise if you have ever watched a team from Brazil play. They have a team filled with players that can out-dance the professionals on Dancing With the Stars, and their magnificent footwork was on display throughout their opening match tonight. Marta is the master of flash and fancy footwork, but Korea Republic was able to hold her to a penalty kick goal, which is pretty impressive.
The Brazil vs. Korea Republic match was the least entertaining game of Group E play today, as Spain and Costa Rica played to a 1-1 draw earlier in the day. Spain opened up scoring on a Vicky Losada goal in the 13th minute, but Costa Rica dished up the tying goal on a Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno equalizer in the 14th minute to make it 1-1. The pace of this match was constant attack, and it is clear that every team in Group E enjoys running. Costa Rica and Spain might provide a challenge for the defense of Brazil when they face-off against one another, but Marta will also be involved in those matches.
Upcoming Group E Matches:
Brazil vs. Spain on June 13
Costa Rica vs. Korea Republic on June 13 (following Brazil v. Spain)
