Marvel TV Casts Leads For Cloak & Dagger
While Marvel’s Cinematic Universe entered Phase 3 with Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Studios’ massive shared superhero universe continues to grow as well. Marvel’s expansion into TV began with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuting on ABC in 2013, then continued to grow including their midseason relief series and Captain America: The First Avenger spinoff Agent Carter. Next, Marvel planned to expand once again to launch The Defenders universe on Netflix with Daredevil as the first installment followed by Jessica Jones, then the high key successful Luke Cage and on March 17, 2017 Iron Fist will premiere.
With the onslaught of extended universe entertainment, Marvel TV continues to reach out into the depths of Marvel content and add a variety of new series. At ABC, Marvel has shows in development such as the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff “Marvel’s Most Wanted”, the studio’s first foray into superhero sitcoms with “Damage Control”, and an untitled project coming from John Ridley. Now, Marvel TV will continue to expand with an adaptation of Cloak and Dagger which will be broadcast on ABC’s-owned Freeform.
Since April of 2016, we’ve been waiting restlessly to find out more about Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger T.V. and now Marvel has shared some interesting information with us. The Cloak & Dagger series is reported to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The director, who is known for her work on The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights. It was also reported that, according to NOLA, Walt Disney Company filed paperwork with Louisiana to film the show’s first season there, and it noted that Cloak & Dagger’s budget was more than $42 million. Along with having Joe Polaski (showrunner and Executive Producer) and Jeph Loeb (Head of Marvel Television and Executive Producer) on board for the show, we know that casting is something that is being taken very serious to portray characters correctly within the Marvel universe.
Disney Channel star Olivia Holt and Hollywood Records recording artist Aubrey Joseph will be starring as Tandy Bowen, a.k.a. Dagger, and Tyrone Johnson, a.k.a. Cloak!
Showrunner and Executive Producer Joe Polaski had this to say about the upcoming series:
“The characters of Tandy and Tyrone have always stood out to me ever since I first met them in the pages of Marvel comics when I was a boy. When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe,”
Head of Marvel Television and Executive Producer, Jeph Loeb had this to add:
“Marvel is delighted to have found our Cloak and Dagger. Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph encompass the true essence of the characters and we are excited for the audience to see them in these roles.”
“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” is a coming-of-age series based on the beloved Marvel characters. Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson come from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul.
Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.
Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.
“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” is scheduled to air in 2018 and is produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios.
