Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports that pitcher Mat Latos has signed with the New Jersey Jackals of the independent Canadian-American Association.Mat Latos

Latos struggled mightily in a small sample size last season. In three starts for the Toronto Blue Jays last season, Latos allowed 11 runs on 19 hits and eight walks with 10 strikeouts in 15 innings. Latos was released shortly after and remained unsigned ever since. It’s been a rough few years for him, as he was last healthy and effective in the majors in 2013 with the Reds.

Latos is only 30, but the road back to the majors will be a long one. Playing for the Jackals will be the first step.

His best season came back in 2012 with Cincinnati–he owned a 14-4 record with a 3.48 ERA in 209.1 IP while striking out 185 batters.

We wish Latos the best of luck in his journey back to the big leagues.
