The Buffalo Bills thought highly of veteran quarterback Matt Cassel, so much so they traded two draft picks for him this offseason in hopes he could compete for the starting job. After OTA’s and minicamp, Cassel is not even a lock to make the Bills opening day roster. He has struggled mightily in the new-look Bills offense and has looked less polished than EJ Manuel and surprise candidate Tyrod Taylor.

New Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman’s offensive style suites the likes of Manuel and Taylor more so than Cassel. Matt’s┬álack of mobility and inaccurate passes during the OTA sessions stood out and while the Bills still have an open QB competition, Cassel is not the front-runner.

If Cassel doesn’t set himself apart from the other quarterback’s on the Bills roster he will be on the market looking for a job. His $4.15 million base salary is not guaranteed and the Bills will not be on the hook if they cut him at anytime before the season starts. Training Camp will be interesting to watch who stands out, because so far none of the quarterback’s on the roster have looked capable of leading the offense.

Cassel’s career numbers are an indication he is not a starting caliber quarterback in today’s pass-happy NFL, and more importantly when looking at his numbers analytically he is a step below average.

With the talent Buffalo’s defense has they are a playoff caliber team, as long as they can put up points on the scoreboard. Western New York is craving to end the longest active playoff drought in the NFL.

Who will be the Bills starting QB come week one? Let me know in the comments below.
